Ingate Street - everyone getting the wrong post - it was changed to Grove Road some time between 1936 &
1948. However in older documents search must be made under Ingate Road.
eastern side of the street was sold in April 1908. Both sides were part of the Fen, which had been owned by the
Monastery of St Edmunds until the time of the Reformation, when Henry VIII, short of money, dissolved the
monasteries and grabbed and sold off their assets. The Fen was purchased for the town of Beccles in 1541 and
was subsequently owned by the Corporation of Beccles Fen.
Beccles Borough Council, the owner after the reorganisation of local government in 1835, decided to sell off this
part of the Fen, partly to raise money for the Council, but partly also to provide more space for housing in the
expanding town of Beccles.
north end (Lot Nos 1-14) sold, the western end of this part (Lots 1-8) was not developed for the next twenty
years. This is particularly surprising as four of these lots had been sold to local builders.
Lots 9 & 10, which now have Numbers 41 & 43 Grove Road built on them, were sold to ER Stimpson for £31
each. He was the landlord of the Crown & Anchor, 7 Ballygate. He joined up in 1914, became a corporal in the
7th Suffolks and died of wounds in February 1916 during the First World War
By 1914 numbers 41-49 had been built. The neighbouring lot No 11 was sold to EJ Hindes a Beccles builder for
£32, No 12 to W Robinson, for £34, who was perhaps the Motor Cycle Manufacturer; Lots 13 & 14 were sold
together to James Aldous for the combined price of £53. He was a manufacturer of bricks & tiles in Gosford
Road & Worlingham Road.
There was much speculation in land at this time as industry and transport were developing, and towns were
expanding
at once deal with the Land in Ingate [Grove] Road by building houses upon it for Working Men, at
reasonable rent, under the powers with which they are invested by the Housing Acts of 1890 to 1903,
there being a good demand for them, at the same time it would give a good impetus to the building

Thomas Laws married, Maria, the daughter of George Fenn, senior in November 1833. Lawson Laws was their son. The property
remained in the hands of the family for over 100 years.
The boundaries of the original property: the nurseries including the houses, were:
On the south: Grove Road
On the east: Beyond the railway 30 yards or so
On the west: The entrance to the car park, following across (what was at one time called Shipwreck Alley) to the junction with
Fair Close - near the Barrington Purvis Alms Houses.
On the north: straight eastwards to Gosford Road and just beyond the railway line.
George Fenn, junior built his own establishment on his father’s land, Ingate Lodge, on his marriage in 1837.
