Semi-detached. No 1 with 8 panes in top and bottom of each window [built shortly before 1871, see below]

No 3 chimneys more decorative. More dripstones.

Brick facade, painted. Pantile roof, continuous, but with gable ends projecting at each end. No chimneys. Change of angle of
pantiles at base, suggesting thatch, but the angle of the roof too shallow. Modern windows, but wider than tall flat arched.
No 11:- One ground floor window to street indented, but blocked up. One of two of first storey also blocked. Smaller height,
probably the original size. Sign of earlier doorway blocked up. Doorcase looks authentic. Dorscraper to left of door.
No 13:- Upper storey 2 windows, new, probably enlarged. 1 central window filled in and smaller.
Doorcase looks authentic, Adam-like swag decoration. Two lower windows, left one sash, 10 paanes top & bottom, but Victorian.
Right: modern.

POLICE COURT: Emma Sampson, wife of Roger Sampson charged with assaulting Martha Moore.
Complainant stated she met defendant in the yard, who commenced to abuse her. The defendant had
something under her apron, which proved to be a chamber pot. The contents of this defendant threw over
complainant, and then struck her in the face with the pot and caused the blood to flow freely. Upon that
the complainant struck her in return. The defendant’s statement was in complete variance. She said she
was going down the yard and met complainant, who commenced to abuse her and to use the most filthy
language towards her. She also struck the defendant and knocked her down. In the fall the chamber pot
was broken, and she struck complainant with one of the pieces. Defendant further said that complainant’s
children pelted her with the contents of the vessel.
In corroboration of her statements she called William Vyse, shoemaker, [of Thurlow’s Yard] Mrs Mills,
wife of Mark Mills, publican, [of the Lord Nelson, 29 Northgate] and Mrs Oxborough, shopkeeper,

fined £1 and 2s costs.
LICENCES: THE LORD NELSON, , NORTHGATE: a beerhouse owned by Messrs E & G Morse, Mr
Aldred, the tenant for 25 years, said he got a living out of the premises & had brought up a family of

the street, the Cambridge Stores, which did not do a quarter of the trade he did. Mr McQueen, 3 times
Mayor of Beccles, said the house always appeared very well conducted. The rooms were fairly large, well
ventilated, and always clean and in good order, and every comfort was provided for the customers. It had
as good accommodation as a club. The Bench decided to refer the licence for compensation.

ACCIDENT: Last Wednesday at 7 pm Mr Pulford, hay dealer of Broome, having purchased from Messrs
Horsley the mare which caused the accident to Mr Drewell on Saturday - which he knew had proved
vicious, proceeded on his way home, driven by Mr Swan of Geldeston, coachman to Edward Dowson, Esq.
When they arrived opposite Mr Cowles’ Academy [44 Northgate], the horse commenced kicking &
became quite unmanageable; until at length, with a view, as he hoped, of preventing an accident, Swan
pulled her into the opening between Mr Garrod’s residence [Tannery House, Northgate?] and his bark
barn; but unfortunately, by this means they were both thrown out with great violence against the wall. The
horse then turned round & ran back, smashing the window of Mr Garrod’s Counting House, and upsetting
a timber grill opposite the Marquis of Granby Public House [39, Northgate], after which, having cleared
herself of the Cart, she ran back to Mr Horsley’s Yard [in London Road, where the Job Centre now stands].
The two men who were quite insensible were conveyed into the Barn & medical aid having been procured,
they were subsequently conveyed to their respective homes.

2003
I have looked up my original note on Sam Lilliston. He was paid £10 4s. 6d. for goods carried from Yarmouth to Beccles from 5
March 1795 to 19 Sept 1796. Goods included iron, glass, deals, wainscot and mahogany.
He may have carried goods at other times but is not specifically named. The clerk of the works, Rufus Marsden, went to Yarmouth at
least 14 times between March 1793 and May 1798. He usually bought (Baltic) timber, often at auction. His expenses for a trip were 4
or 5s.
An idea of carriage costs is given for a timber purchase in May 1778. The goods cost £43 7s.7d. Freight to Beccles was
£1 1s 11d and on to Henham 4s. plus 3s. for corn for the horses and assistance in loading at Beccles. This looks very much like the
estate carter doing the Beccles-Henham leg.
The first brick was laid on 26 March 1792 and the house was ready for occupation five years later, although work went on inside for
some time after that.
About 20% of the manhours were worked by tradesmen from London and their wage rate was about 75% above that for local men.
So some 30% of the wage bill reflected London not country wages.

TALK given in October 1956 (Newspaper Cutting)
The Garrod family ceased to operate the Tannery during 1890 and for 10 years it was idle. In 1900
Messrs John Lees & Co took it over and restarted tanning. Mr AE Smith joined in 1901.
Bullock hides were mostly treated, cows considered too thin, while bull hides were too thick.
Hides on arrival were weighed - usually weighing from 70-80lbs - horns removed and the whole skin
stretched flat for examination. Then put into lime pits, weak lime used at first, and then the strength
increased, some 9 to 12 weeks covering this process.
From these pits - some 16 were in use in Northgate - the skins were taken into the “beam” house and
put into clean water for a day or two before the removal of hair, followed by another rinse for
“Fleshing”. [the description continued]

Founded in 1934 to publish popular books for children, BURKE PUBLISHING COMPANY is now a major educational publisher
whose influence extends throughout the world.
In 1970, Burke established a Canadian subsidiary in Toronto and in the same year it became imperative that the parent Company
should handle its own distribution. And so it was that ‘The Barn’ in Northgate, Beccles, was converted and, on January 1st., 1971,
began operations as the Burke Book Distribution Centre despatching—On the same day—every order received by the Company.
The warehouse despatches 4,000 books a day.

cottages which he has lately purchased on the east side of Northgate at the
point where the same enters the Old Market, for the purposes of widening &
improving the street. Committee to consider the plan.
Rev Howman’s letter: two alternatives: the second & more expensive chosen.
Mr Thomas Woodroffe’s estimate:
It does not appear to be necessary to meddle with the lower storey of Lark’s dwelling house, but the
projection must be taken away & the breach made good. From the end of his dwelling house where
is a kind of offset (a little nearer to the Old Market than the stem of the vine) the whole should be swept
away - to the corner of my dwelling house, with the removal of the garden wall and the removal of a
building connected with it which must be rebuilt.
[I shall] be obliged to place the cottages so much backwarder, encroaching thereby on the garden
ground, which to cottagers is of great importance.
Cost £95 for work to be done. The wall is to commence from the window of Mr Larke’s shop.

18th century. Palladian elevation to main front. 2 storeys. Red brick, with stone cornice, and parapet with stone coping. Rendered
plinth. Centre breaks forward with 2 storey brick pilasters with moulded brick caps and bases. Centre portion only has brick
architrave and frieze. Main roof with end gables with apex chimneys. Pantiles. There is a lower 2 storey., 3 window wing on north
end without stonework, but with wood bracket cornice. Main block windows, 1:3:1, sashes in flush frames, with flat arches and
stone keys and cills. 6-panel door in pediment mutular Doric case, arched patterned fanlight, 3/4 columns, and triglyphs. (Oak
staircase with slender turned balusters. Adam type mantel. NMR photos.
Pevsner: Buildings of England: Suffolk by Nikolaus Pevsner:
Good 18th century house. Has 5 bays & 2 storeys, the middle emphasised by heavy giant pilasters and a heavy attic. Big stone
doorway with Tuscan demi-columns, a metope frieze and a pediment. The date is probably c 1720.
My comment: The brick facade of the main entrance front post-dates the Victorian building to its north (originally part of the same
house). The brickwork overlaps the Victorian part built perhaps in 1880. The drawing of the town of Beccles from the river dating
probably from the 1760s shows the house with a pedimented top, rather than the present parapet top.

Diary of John Barber Scott of Bungay:
In January, as a private pupil, together with James, Henry and William Yeames
and Richard Brownsmith, I followed Mr Page, to his newly purchased house in
Bridge Street [Northgate], Beccles, which once belonged to Mr Purvis, since the Bacons
and Howmans, and later owned by Mr Crowfoot. £105 per annum was paid for
my tuition, board and lodging, besides extras.
[ This seems to have been written up many years later. I think the information
about the ownership of the property is confused. Mr Page sold the house and
moved to Ipswich in June 1807. I do not think Purvis or Crowfoot owned the house]

TERRIFIC GALE: The most destructive gale in this country since 4 August 1879, prevailed on Sunday
afternoon. The noise and confusion were most alarming, particularly when the shutters of several shops
were simultaneously carried away by one of the most furious gusts of wind. The buildings in
NORTHGATE suffered more from the gale than any other part of the town, All along NORTHGATE
broken tiles and brick ends strewed the road, covering it entirely in two or three places. Mr E Masters’
house was almost completely unroofed, and his conservatory was practically ruined.
