ACCIDENT: Late on Monday night Martin Boon was driving Mr Sampson & Mr Flynn to the Horse &

Company. As a Free School, 50 boys from Beccles, Ringsfield and Gillingham were educated there each year in its Fine original
building in Ballygate. This is now the Beceles Town Museum. [see Ballygate]
Over the sixty years 1910-1970 the school roll rose from 80 to nearly 500 pupils. It became the Sir John Leman Grammar School
and counted among its finest scholars Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry in 1964.
In 1971 thc school became a comprehensive upper school serving a large area of the Waveney Valley, South Norfolk and
beyond. Now the school has grown in size to accommodate over 1300 students in the 13-18 age range. Over 300 are in the Sixth
Form. New buildings have been added, a thriving Sports Centre developed, and the school is the centre for adult education in
the community. However, the desire to provide quality education has been fiercely maintained and is symbolised by the school
motto ‘Achievement for All’.
