Catholic School. SW Rix, solicitor said his bell was rung violently, he chased two boys into the
Newmarket. Caught one, who gave a wrong address - he really lived in Ravensmere. A great
nuisance to people. Clerk directed by the Mayor to ask the school authorities to give the boy a
suitable punishment so that he would not likely to forget it in a hurry.
17th century with probable 16th century base structure incorporated, and 18th century refacing of main front and one side with 19th
century additions at the rear. Old deeds show that the house was once “The Greyhound & Dog Inn”.
The exterior is comparatively plain. Three storeys with parapet. Brick distempered. Two brick bands, five windows, some filled in.
Modern casements, mullion transom, in flush frames, with segmental arches. Six-panel door in wood case with three quatrer Doric
columns and bracket pediment, arched radial bar fanlight.
Interesting interior:- panelled rooms, some enriched window architraves and mantels, and enriched cornices. Two ducknest grates,
one contemporary, one imported. Oak stair with turned newels. One panelled room with date 1790 on door.
Nikolaus Pevsner: The Buildings of England: Suffolk;
Restrained, but not unimpressive. Three storeys, brick, whitewashed, with frontages to the Churchyard and to Saltgate.
Listed Building:
Gazebo at the south west corner of garden of No 1:
17th century, square panelled room, about nine feet across, with domed ceiling painted with hunting, fishing and boating scenes,
with background of village and church, rivers etc, perhaps by a painter of the Dutch School, on canvas fixed to the plaster and is in
good preservation. One sash window with glazing bars and flush frame. An extension of the main square, either contemporary or
18th century, adds a further six feet or so.

[He was Churchwarden at the time of the Beccles Martyrs being burnt in 1556. Fox
describes the burning:
“Then one Robert Bacon, dwelling in the said Beccles, a very enemy to God’s truth, and a persecutor of
his people, being there present within hearing thereof, willed the tormentors to throw on faggots to stop
the knaves’ breathes, as he termed them ; so hot was his burning charity.”]
